Baptists are a Christian denomination whose churches follow a congregational pattern. This means that every church is independent and every member has an equal right to participate fully in the church’s affairs. Baptists affirm the historic creeds of the Christian faith. One of the major distinctions between Baptists and other Christian groups is found in the concept of church. Baptists believe that every Christian community, every local church, is a church in the true meaning of the word.', 'Every local church is separate and independent of other churches and does not depend on other churches or any other higher authority. Baptist churches are, however, in relationship with other like-minded churches. With those who share the same convictions, we are united into the Czech Baptist Union (BJB), the European Baptist Federation, and the International Baptist Union. These groups are not Baptist churches but associations of separate local churches. Baptists believe that faith is personal. No one can make another person believe. We are convinced that everyone is responsible for his own soul. The decision to believe must be done by each person on a completely voluntarily basis. Because of that, we reject the use of force in the matters of conscience. We believe that everyone, believers and non-believers alike, should have religious freedom. That is why one of the first movements for religious freedom started among Baptists. We also believe in strict separation of the church from the government. Support of the church by government power has always had negative consequences in the history of the church. What is the highest authority for belief and life? The Baptist answer is, “the Bible.” The Old and New Testaments are God’s Word and they are our guide for what we believe and how we live. The Bible is not a dead literary text. The Holy Spirit leads us to understand the Bible. He leads us, so that through the words of the Bible, we are addressed by the living God. And because we believe that God, through the words of His Book, still talks to people, Baptists are therefore people who love the Bible. The name “Baptist” has its origin in a Greek word, baptizó;, which means “to immerse” and is transliterated into English “to baptize”. Membership in a Baptist church is based upon a believable verbal confession before the church that the person has been born again and has come to personal faith in Jesus Christ. Upon their confession of faith they are baptized, or immersed in water. They are accepted as members of the local church and commit themselves to live under the requirements of God’s Word which guides in their personal and church life. As soon as someone becomes a member of a Baptist church, they also become a part of a mission movement. It may be said that each Baptist is a missionary. Missions means spreading the joyful message - the Gospel of God’s love, of forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who will believe in Jesus Christ, and gathering those who believe into local congregations who will do the same. But missions also means protecting the weak and powerless, helping those in distress, and extending peace. Both evangelization and social help are an integral part of missions. Baptists place priority on evangelization because as peoples’ lives are changed, they can form churches through which God may bless society. Also, in this way, Baptists want to say to the world that in Jesus Christ everyone can find full life. |
